Tier List Templates: How to Start Fast and Make Them Your Own

A tier list template gives you ready-made items and tiers so you can skip the setup. Here’s how to use one and how to build your own.

Tier list template with items waiting to be ranked

A tier list template is a starting point: a set of items and tiers prepared for a topic, so you can go straight to ranking. When you open the tier list maker, it starts with a simple fruit template you can rank right away.

Customizing a template

Templates are meant to be changed. After loading one:

  1. Remove what you don’t care about. Hover over an item and select the × (on touchscreens, tap the item first).
  2. Add what’s missing. Type new items into the box under the board, separated by commas.
  3. Adjust the tiers. Rename rows, change colors or add an F tier to fit the topic.
  4. Change the title. Click the title above the board and type your own.

Building your own template

Any list can become a reusable template. Set up the items and tiers, leave everything in the unranked area, then download it or share the item list as text with friends so they can paste it into their own board.

What makes a good template

  • A clear, specific topic — “Breakfast foods”, not “Food”.
  • Items at a similar level — compare individual dishes with dishes, not dishes with whole cuisines.
  • A manageable number — 12 to 30 items is plenty for most topics.
  • Neutral order — don’t pre-sort items from best to worst, or you’ll nudge people’s rankings.

Starting from scratch

If no template fits, select New list for a blank board with the standard tiers. Starting from nothing takes a few extra minutes, but it’s the best way to create a custom tier list that’s entirely your own.
